Profiles of JHESS Executive Members 2020/21

Mr Khalil Sayed
Khalil is a JHESS executive member of long standing and served as the convener of our property portfolio for a number of years. He is a businessperson who, despite his busy schedule, still finds time to serve on many other community-based organisations besides JHESS. We are indeed fortunate to have Khalil serving on the executive, as he brings a wealth of knowledge and provides intergenerational continuity to the Society. Khalil’s late father, Marhoom Hassan Sayed, was a chairperson of JHESS and his daughter, Zakira Sayed, previously served as a secretary.

Dr Shafick Sonday (Ismail)
Shafick has served on the executive for over a decade now and has played a pivotal role in the education and food parcel subcommittees. Shafick, a medical doctor by profession, also serves on many other institutions in the field of education and religion. He brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the executive. He is a true humanitarian at heart who is dedicated to the upliftment of society as a whole.

Mr Mohamed Shafee Mowzer
Shafee is a long-serving executive member and served in the capacity of secretary for over a decade. He is outspoken and brings innovative ideas and guidance onto the executive. He is a businessperson and also serves on many other societies, particularly in the field of sport and religion. He was instrumental in the acquisition of our facility in Melkbosstrand. He is a committed humanitarian with a generous personality and a strong belief in the values of JHESS.

Mr Khairodien Mia Sulaiman Ulde
Mia, as he is affectionately known, has served on the executive for over a decade. He has been serving on the youth and food parcel committees and had a stint as assistant secretary. A businessperson who is compassionate and charitable, Mia is always willing to support any JHESS activities and is committed to its values. He enjoys watching cricket, rugby and soccer.

Mr Atawullah Sonday
Atawullah has served on the executive for over a decade. He is a property management consultant and a keen Scrabble player, who has national ranking. Atawullah also serves on the food parcel committee and was the chorus leader and team co-manager for the Habsani Royals on tour to India. He certainly brings a special lightheartedness to the executive with his songs and witty quips!

Mr Nazier Brey
Nazier joined the executive at a young age and has served thereon for many years. An electrical engineer and keen photographer, he has served on the food parcel and youth committees. He is indeed passionate about the values of JHESS and certainly follows in the footsteps of his grandfather and uncle who also served the Society. He was the social committee convenor five years ago and was one of the members who started the food parcel campaign.
His vision is to see the society grow in the coming years while embracing the diverse challenges we face as a society in order to fulfil our educational and social obligations.

Ms Ishrat Banu Hoosain
Ishrat Banu is currently a lecturer in Commercial Law and Corporate Governance. She is a certified mediator, a keen travel enthusiast and an avid reader. Ishrat Banu has served on the executive for a number of years. She subscribes to the JHESS values and brings her legal and community insights onto the executive. She is an ardent and willing champion of the myriad initiatives of the society. She is committed to work and contribute towards a free, enlightened and empowered South African community at large.

Ms Zakira Sayed
Zakira joined the executive at a young age and is the third generation of her family to serve on the JHESS executive. She has served on the youth and orphan committees with dedication and passion. She also served as the secretary of the society for a number of years. Zakira is an Industrial Psychologist by profession. She has excellent fundraising skills and has played a huge role in this sphere of work for the society. As mentioned previously, Zakira is truly displaying aspirations for community and cultural development similar to those of her grandfather, Marhoom Hassan Sayed.
Zakira believes that investing time to serve the community is invaluable as this enables one to effect change to communities in need.

Ms Azmat Jaffer
Azmat joined the executive a few years ago and has really come to the fore in recent years. She is an editor by profession. She serves on the education and media subcommittees. She brings invaluable skills and expertise to the media committee and is innovative in her thinking and approach to growing the society and its membership.

Mr Zainulabidien Mowzer
Zanulabiedien joined the executive a few years ago and has brought so much energy into the activities of the society. He is an IT specialist and contributes technical expertise to the executive team. He is hardworking and committed to the many JHESS initiatives and willing to serve. He is a good role model for our youth.
He would like to see growth in the society so that JHESS can continue to support the growing needs of the community.

Mr Abdul Majid Mowzer
Majid has been an executive member for over three decades, and has served as deputy chairperson and chairperson of the Society during this period.
He is currently a retiree but was a management consultant in both the corporate and public sectors. He serves on many community-based organisations, and is a known social activist.
He brings a wide range of experience to JHESS and remains committed to the JHESS ideals and values. He is passionate about developing the next generation of JHESS leadership.
