JHESS 110 Years Commemoration
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
As the crescent of Muharram ushers in a new Islamic year, our hearts turn to the eternal message of Karbala—a message that transcends time and continues to illuminate the path of humanity. At the same time we conclude the 1500 year legacy of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) but continue to be guided by his principles and teachings.
The sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS), his family, and his loyal companions was not merely a moment in history; it was a timeless stand for truth, justice, dignity, and faith. On the plains of Karbala, Imam Hussain (AS) taught us that principles are worth preserving, even at the greatest personal cost. His legacy reminds us that courage is born from conviction and that service to humanity is among the highest forms of worship.
As we gather this year in remembrance of Karbala, we do so during a truly historic milestone— the 110th Year Commemoration of JHESS. For more than a century, JHESS has been guided by the very values embodied by Imam Hussain (AS): sacrifice, unity, compassion, resilience, and service to community. The achievements of the past 110 years stand as a testament to the vision, dedication, and selfless efforts of generations who carried this institution forward.
The enduring message of Karbala is often captured in the powerful words, “Every day is Ashura, and every land is Karbala.” This serves as a reminder that the choice to stand for truth over falsehood, justice over oppression, and unity over division confronts us in every era and every community. Muharram calls upon us not only to mourn, but to embody the values for which Imam Hussain (AS) stood.
As we reflect on the events of Karbala, we cannot ignore the suffering that continues to unfold in many parts of the world today. The ongoing devastation and loss of innocent lives in Gaza, the hardships endured in Lebanon, and the plight of oppressed communities across the globe weigh
heavily on our hearts. These tragedies remind us that the struggle against injustice remains as relevant today as it was over fourteen centuries ago. While the circumstances may differ, the moral lessons of Karbala endure: to uphold truth, defend human dignity, stand with the oppressed, and never become indifferent to suffering.
In remembering Imam Hussain (AS), we are reminded that silence in the face of injustice is never an option. His sacrifice inspires us to be voices of compassion, advocates for peace, and champions of justice wherever people are denied their rights and dignity. Let us keep all those
affected by conflict, displacement, and oppression in our prayers, and strive in our own communities to promote understanding, unity, and service to humanity.
As we commemorate 110 years of service and look towards the future with hope and determination, let us renew our commitment to serving others, strengthening our bonds of unity, uplifting those in need, and safeguarding the principles of justice and integrity in our daily lives. In doing so, we honour both the legacy of Karbala and the rich heritage of JHESS.
In our efforts to continue the legacy of JHESS we will be hosting a cricket tournament especially for our younger generation on 18 October 2026. Please follow our social media posts for more information.
Muharram Mubarak.
