COVID-19 Update 7

The Western Cape continues to remain the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic with 65% of positive cases and 69% of all deaths recorded being located in the Western Cape; this despite South Africa not having reached peak infection levels yet.

With the easing of the Lockdown to Level 3 from 1 June 2020 to mitigate the economic downturn, it is prudent to note that the number of positive cases and deaths will continue to significantly increase, as already observed during Level 4 of the lockdown.

It will require all members of society to act responsibly and to proceed with extreme caution by continuing to practice the basic behavioural changes meticulously: ensure good hand hygiene, wear the cloth face mask correctly and observe physical distancing of 1, 5 m in the public domain.

COVID-19 has impacted not only negatively on the health and economic sectors but also directly or indirectly on every individual’s mental health due to social isolation and economic hardship linked to the prolonged lockdown.

We call on you to be continually supportive of each other to overcome these challenges.
