COVID-19 Update 10

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected and disrupted the livelihood of millions of people throughout the world, as it has in South Africa. This past Wednesday the President announced the further easing of the lockdown, with the reopening of restaurants, cinemas and hair salons forming part of the government’s initiative to mitigate the economic hardships experienced by the majority of our citizens. The President further requested that we become more vigilant and collectively take responsibility for the behavioural changes that we need to adopt to reduce the spread of this devastating virus. The next few weeks are crucial as the infection rates are expected to rise significantly. It is incumbent on each individual to be even more mindful of their behaviour and actions. Collectively the COVID-19 virus can be defeated – a point I cannot over emphasise. I urge everyone to follow the GOLDEN RULES below. بسم الله الرحمن الرحيمنحمده ونصلي ونسلّم على رسوله الكريم Dear Member The COVID-19 infections continue to rise in the Western Cape and many of our families and friends have been infected. We pray that Allah grants them a speedy recovery and protect us all from falling prey to it. We have to adopt and implement the health protocols seriously and be disciplined, otherwise we will continue to add to the cycle of infections. Youth Day This past week we commemorated Youth Day in our country. Many of us recall 16 June 1976 as a turning point in our lives as students who participated in the call for freedom, democracy and change. I am reminded of the African mythical bird called Sankofa, which means ‘Go back and get it.’ Sankofa teaches that in moving forward we must constantly go back to our past and use the lessons and wisdom from there to help us in the present and future. Without the past, there can be no future. Our experiences, whether personal or as a people, remain our greatest teacher and should guide us today. Today our youth will have to take up the cudgels to continue the call for change for equality, justice and economic development so that we lessen the burden of unemployment and poverty. Our youth will have to become active participants in the post COVID-19 economic restructuring. Dear Member The power of prayer remains the most powerful tool at our disposal. In echoing these words from my letter last week, I share with you Qaṣīdah al-Faraj, ‘the Poem of Relief’, as we pray for the speedy recovery of all those affected by COVID-19, In Shaa Allah. Ameen. It is generally attributed to al-Imām Muḥammad bin Idrīs ash-Shāfiī (204H.) as well as Abū al-Atāhiyah Ismā`īl (213H.) However, it is most famously regarded as the work of Abu al-Qāsim as-Suhailī (581H.) The translation of the Poem of Relief below is by Sh. Amienoellah Abderoef: O You Who sees and hears what is in the heart [the conscience], You are the means on which I rely for every eventuality, O You on Whom we place our hope in the face of all hardship, and to Whom we complain, flee and find sanctuary [from every adversity], O You, the treasures of Whose provision are found in saying: “Be”, shower upon us [Your Bounty], for all good is with You, in its entirety. I have no means [of access to good] but through my being in need of You, and through my being in need of You, I drive away my poverty. I have no strategy but to knock on Your Door, and should I be driven away, then on what door can I knock [to achieve Felicity]? And Who shall I then call upon and exclaim His Name, if Your Bounty is withheld from a poor person [and Your Generosity]? Far be it from Your Glory and Majesty that You would cast a sinner into despair, for Your Grace is...

COVID-19 Update 9

The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to rage through the globe, with the World Health Organisation appealing for greater caution and the implementation of social distancing. In South Africa, the Western Cape remains the EPICENTER of the pandemic with the highest number of positive cases and deaths.Last week the President of our country visited the Western Cape and immediately advised for the increased availability of more beds in the ICUs at hospitals and staff (+/- 5,000), and indicated that saving lives is more important than funding.Despite government efforts and health advice from various world-renowned experts, we as citizens tend to ignore the enormous burden that COVID-19 has placed on each and every human being, affecting our own and others’ health. It also brings with it significant ECONOMIC and PSYCHOSOCIAL CHALLENGES, and is reshaping and redefining human behaviour and actions. We have to become more mindful of our actions and behaviours. The power to defeat this devastating virus is in our hands.Follow the Golden Rules to reduce the spread of this virus. MAINTAIN PHYSICAL DISTANCE IN PUBLIC. COVID-19 Update 8

The Western Cape continues to be the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of positive cases and deaths recorded. Over the past few weeks I have provided advice on measures and guidelines to prevent the spreading of this deadly COVID-19 virus. We are deeply concerned that some people still believe that this virus does not exist or that nothing will happen to them. The easing of the lockdown does not mean the virus does not exist. The lockdown regulations were eased to mitigate the economic hardships that many are currently experiencing.I decided, in this update, to narrate true events that happened this week concerning an elderly lady who recently succumbed to this virus.Since the lockdown started 10 weeks ago, she did not set foot outside her home.A son who lived with her was asymptomatic. He only went to the shops three times in the 10-week period and contracted the virus, and sadly passed it on to his mother who eventually succumbed to it this week. This virus is real. It can be contracted by anyone. The consequences can be dire, as in the case of the elderly lady.Theories abound about the virus, and the symptoms are mild in the majority of cases but you should do your best to protect yourself and others. If anyone saved a nation, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole of humanity. Quran 5:32.Heed the advice you have been given and play your part in the spirit of Ubuntu. I am because you are. We are in this together. Let us serve, help and protect each other. Physical distancing and...
